AGRA FORT

Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most remarkable Mughal forts in India. Located just 2.5 km from the Taj Mahal, the fort is often referred to as the “Lal Qila of Agra” or the “Walled City.” Constructed mainly in red sandstone, Agra Fort is a symbol of power, culture, and Mughal grandeur. It served as the main residence of the Mughal emperors until 1638, before the capital shifted to Delhi. Today, it is one of the top attractions in Agra, drawing history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and tourists from across the globe.

History of Agra Fort

The original fort at Agra existed since the 11th century, but it was extensively rebuilt in 1565 by Emperor Akbar in red sandstone. Over time, it was further embellished by Shah Jahan, who added marble structures inside. Agra Fort witnessed several important events in Mughal history – from Akbar’s rule to Shah Jahan’s imprisonment by his son Aurangzeb. It was here that Shah Jahan spent his final days, gazing at the Taj Mahal, the mausoleum he built for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal.
